Refashioned skirt and tank

So as of late I have been trying to do a craft each day or sew a little on a project each day. This doesn't always work having a ten month old that has the attention span of about 3 seconds. I usually try to quickly sew some stitches or cut out some fabric while he is taking a nap. In between running a brush through my hair, brushing my teeth, and running through the house picking up toys, shoes, and dog toys. If only people could see how I look during the week! I feel bad for our neighbors. I walk outside to take our dog out to pee with my hair lumpy, an old t-shirt on and sandals with my socks. Wow isn't that a pretty image. Saturday's and Sundays are my usual dress fancy day's. If only the people at church knew how I looked during the week! After Liam was born I was sick of him always spitting up geysers of food all over my nice clothes so I opted to wear old t-shirts that could handle the puddles of spit up I would face everyday. It has been fun thinking of a new outfit I can sew to wear to church or out on the town on Saturday's. Sunday is my day to get all dolled up and fancy, and to feel feminine. This week. I decided to make a dress to wear to church. I went to D.I. and found this bright red skirt. I decided to buy a grey tank top to use for the top of the dress. My mind was turning and trying to figure out how to refashion this skirt and tank into a cute dress. And this is what I came up with:

I took a red T-shirt and cut it up to make the flower. And found some striped fabric to make a sash, and a similar striped black and white button to be the center of the flower. I ruffed some black fabric from an old t-shirt and sewed it on the straps of the tank. The color scheme reminds me of the wizard of OZ. The part where it shows the dead witch under the house with her striped black and white socks and the ruby red slippers.

I am currently obsessed with taking my old clothes or finding used clothes at D.I. and refashioning them. I have always wanted to do this but didn't have a sewing machine and didn't really know how to use one. Since Zach is in Graduate school we have no money so that means no shopping trips for Sommer to get new cute clothes. So I decided if I couldn't go out and buy the new cute fashions why not make them from used clothing I have or that I can find for cheap. I have been looking online at designer clothing and trying to see how I could create a similar look with something I have. Even if Zach wasn't in school there is no way I could spend $1,000 or more on a piece of clothing. Probably since fashion changes so much I would rather buy a lot of less expensive pieces so when they are old or out of date I am fine getting rid of them. I also love to get more quantity rather than quality. This doesn't mean I like things to look cheap. I look for things that are on sale or that look more expensive but really aren't. Zach and I totally differ in this category. He is the opposite, and thats why when I met him he only had like a couple shirts and a few pairs of pants:)

This Faux Vest I made for Liam is from the same pair of pants I used to make my own vest in the last two photos.

This collar and cuff idea I got from a blog. It is made from a mans dress shirt. Since Zach wouldn't let me cut up any of his I went to D.I. and got a shirt.

This vest is the first project I have just winged which is probably not the smartest idea being a beginner. I used an old pair of m jeans and just crossed my fingers and hoped it turned out as I had planned. The collar ties into a bow in the back which is hard to see in the photos. I count my lucky stars that it turned out, but I guess if it wouldn't have it would just be another learning experience.

A boy and his Dog!

I have a feeling Liam and Bella are going to be best buddies as he grows up. He will sit in his bouncer chair and grunt and squeal to get her attention and shake his arms up and down really fast like a little bird. When sitting on the floor playing, Bella will go and sit between his legs and Liam will grab her fur and rock like he is riding a horse. She is so good with him like you can see in these photos he will pull on her ears, and tail, try and suck on her feet (yuck)!

Bella will bring her toys to Liam and expect him to throw them for her, and will wait patiently for him to let go of her toys once he has grabbed one. The other day I was in the Kitchen and looked over just in time to see Liam put something in his mouth. He made a face like what the heck is this! I went right over and started digging in his mouth to find it was a piece of Bella's dog food. No wonder his face looked a little unsure. I guess it will just toughen up his immune system. I guess this is just the beginning of having a curious little boy!

Upcycling old T-shirts...

Just the other week Zach's mom sent us home after a visit with a huge bag of his old T-shirts. I decided I would upcycle some of them into a hat and some bibs for Liam. It is so fun taking old things are turing them into something new that you can use. Here are a few of the things I have made from Zach's t-shirts...

This hat was really fun to make because I wanted it to not look perfect. So if the stitching is not straight or some of the edges fray it will be the look I am going for:)

My new Hobby

So since being home I have decided to get crafty. Zach got me a sewing machine so I have decided I really want to get into sewing. My favorite thing is making stuff for my little bug Liam! Here are some of the things I have made so far. They are by far not perfect but with practice I hope to get better:)

Towel bibs for our little man who spits up like "Old Faithful".
